Spirit Days and SUMMER LEARNING!

Triplets X 2 on Tuesday!
Although today is "Twinning Day," right now I am thinking about summer and reading. . .

Do you know that you can help your child(ren) transition into next year's grade simply by continuing with a little regular reading during the coming summer days?  You may come to appreciate a little quiet time at home, too, by setting the stage for periods of relaxed reading. We have a few ways to help support your efforts:
It's time to sign up!

NCS SUMMER READING CHALLENGE  All K-7th grade students (that is, next year's 8th graders) are eligible to participate in our summer reading challenge.  It's simple! Just read, keep a log, and see Mrs. Harriman in September.  See SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

NCS ONLINE LEARNING INSTITUTE A number of NCS students w nominated by their teachers for this.  Take advantage of it, if you can!

NCS LENDING LIBRARY PROGRAM  Our library is open regularly for this year's K-Grade 5 students.  Gr. K-5 families have received an email explaining this, but here's the link for this program:  LENDING LIBRARY INFO and/or SIGN UP

The link below will explain ALL of the ABOVE programs and may help you plan for summer:

Now, to get back to the current week's agenda:

Wednesday's SPIRIT DAY is "Fancy Dressed or Maine-ah's Best" and the word of the day will be responsibility.    Want to dress to the nine's and look suave and sophisticated? You're "Fancy."   If you'd rather, think camo, flannel, lobster, moose, etc., and you're a "Maine-ah."  Either way, your class will be glad to see how you interpret Wednesday's Spirit Day in the morning.

Spirit Days at NCS

Monday=Mismatched Day

There were some crazy, mixed up outfits walking around here today.  Today's character word of the day was KINDNESS!

Tomorrow is about TOTALLY TWINNING/respect.   Wednesday's theme is FANCY DRESSED or MAINE-AH's BEST/responsibility.   Thursday will be GO GREEN FOR NCS/honesty.   Friday's them is up to individual FUN FRIDAY CLASS CHOICE/perseverance.  (See last week's blog post for details.)  Participation is optional, but we're keeping track of which class has the most spirit and those results will be announced at the end of the week.  It's meant to be fun!

Please be mindful of your child's lunch balance(s) as we near the end of the school year. All balances must be paid in full on June 23.   (Credit balances are carried forward.)

More news tomorrow. . .

June!

Greetings from Hadlock Field!

There is so much to share with you!   This past week 6-8th grade students had a perfect day to attend the AOS93 Field Day hosted at LIncoln Academy. Fifth grade students celebrated completion of the DARE program by taking in a Sea Dogs game and, again, the weather on Thursday was GORGEOUS!  NCS spring sports have now wrapped up. Athletes will be invited to an awards potluck on Thursday, June 15 (more on that separately).

Today four lucky NCS girls and 4 boys are heading home with a new bicycle, thanks to the generosity of the Alna Anchor Lodge of Masons in Damariscotta. Third through sixth grade students were offered the opportunity to read as part of the Bikes for Books challenge. Meanwhile, 8th grade students are at the FARMS kitchen, grade 3 and senior buddies have a final meeting at the Nobleboro Historical Society, and NWEA testing is done! (YAHOO!)

Next week:
  • SPIRIT WEEK at NCS. Yesterday's post will provide you with Monday-Friday's themes
  • Grade 2 will travel to the Rachel Carson Salt Pond Preserve
Looking ahead:
  • NCS offers summer reading opportunities and a few levels of support to keep children reading throughout the summer.   Families, watch for more information coming your way.
  • June 19-21 will be a busy week for 8th grade, culminating with the 8th grade promotion celebration on Wed, June 21 at 6:30
  • Step up day:Thursday, June 22
  • Last day of school:  Friday, June 23 dismissal at noon
Enjoy the weekend!  (Remember to read previous posts for Spirit Week details, etc.)

NCS Spirit Week is June 12-16 Read on!

We're still working at learning, but we're also ready to lighten up and show some school spirit! Next week--June 12-16--will be SPIRIT WEEK at NCS.  The daily themes are listed below.   Each morning, teachers will keep a tally of how many students have participated in that day's theme. The winning class will be announced on Friday. Also, on Thursday, the 8th grade has challenged staff to a volleyball game during the afternoon. We'll be looking forward seeing how that goes!

This event is intended to be a fun way to begin each morning next week. It's voluntary, no pressure to come dressed in each day's theme, but we hope your children will want to! Your child may dress for one, two, or every day.  In addition to the theme celebrations mentioned here, each day will have a focus on one character word or a trait that represents what it means to be part of the community--kindness, respect, honesty, etc.

Thanks for helping to keep enthusiasm high through the end of the school year!  (Please be sure you've also read the post below (June 6) for other important information about end of year events.)

In case you missed the last game, you'll enjoy reading this:

The girls had their second and final playoff game at Medomak yesterday on a wet and dreary afternoon. We had lots of family and NCS staff cheering us on during the exciting game. Many of the girls were nervous and scared as we warmed up and started the first inning, but as soon as they got into the game, the jitters died down a little.

The game was intense and there were a few nervous errors for both teams, but the game was also filled with outstanding moments offensively and defensively. Katelin seemed to be the trigger to get our bats going. With two outs and a strong hit into left field, she started a rally of five hits in a row that earned our team 3 runs in the first inning. Many of the girls had powerful hits and aggressive base running to help our team fight.

Defensively Hayley, Paige, Payson and Annalee were standouts yesterday. With 15 strikeouts, Hayley pitched one of her best games of the season. Paige caught a ball in right field that could have rallied Medomak, but instead ended the 6th inning. At second base, Payson made a difficult catch and a quick throw to third to catch a Medomak player off the base and secure the double play. Two different times Annalee fielded balls in left field and hit Payson as the cutoff who made amazing throws to third base for the out.

With all of those outstanding plays, I'm sure you are wondering how we lost the game! I did the same--all night...and continue today--but for all of our amazing feats, the other team had similar plays. In the end, sometimes it really gets down to who has the last at bat...it wasn't us.

It was a good season and after a few tears the girls were laughing on the bus ride home. Today the girls are talking about next year; they are resilient!!

Here's some news!

Congratulations to the girls softball team on a great season!  Our girls lost by one run to Medomak in a very exciting playoff game.  Way to go Lions!

Tomorrow, Wednesday, June 7 our 6, 7 and 8th grade students will participate in the AOS93 FIELD DAY to be held at Lincoln Academy.   Please dress appropriately (remember sunscreen!) to be outdoors for most of the day.  They will leave NCS in the morning and return here before dismissal.

Thursday, June 8, the 5th grade students will wrap up D.A.R.E. and celebrate that accomplishment by attending a SEA DOGS game.  Reminder: dress appropriately for Thursday's weather!

On Friday, June 9 the results of BIKES for BOOKS will be announced! Thanks to the local Masons, some lucky 3-6th grade students will be going home with a bicycle after Friday's drawing. In order to have been part of this drawing, students were encouraged to read and turn in tickets for the books they've completed.  All 3-6 grade students were eligible to participate.

Coming:

  • Thursday, June 8:  Last homework club
  • Friday, June 9  All NCS library books must be returned
  • M-F, June 12-16:  Spirit Week at NCS (see forthcoming blog, scheduled to arrive here soon

Enjoy your week!
